Fun - gamification of behavioural change

I am a big advocate of the Carrot as opposed to the stick when it comes to encouraging the masses to do the right thing. Doing the ‘right’ thing must be the natural easy way, not the righteous hard way to live.

Sweden appears to have had some success as illustrated here by the BBC. Perhaps we are taking the completely wrong approach in forcing people to become more sustainable.

While maybe only 20% of the population may value sustainability, you cant deny that 99.9% value fun and smiles right?

“We humans are capable of greatness” - Carl Sagan

I’m not a big fan of just seeking out and posting Youtube vids, but this I was compelled to share.  The late Carl Sagan (reading an excerpt from one of his books) never lost his child-like wonder, which is why his words are so truly poetic, sincere and inspirational. Put against the background of images such as these, the message intensifies so much more.

Working in the sustainability industry, I occasionally catch myself thinking negatively about humanity, feeling frustrated about (my) our flaws. But this video actually made me feel good about the positive potential of humanity, and the generations to come. (It actually made me reflect on the concept of ‘colonisation’ differently for the first time.)

We really are standing on the shoulders of giants.

Physics Video from the 80’s

Why do I love this video so much:

  • Its so old school
  • Tha animations are so cute
  • I was struggling to find a good explanation of Voltage
  • It uses analogies so well
  • I needed it to understand my uni course notes which took forever to figure out
  • I was struggling to know how to properly power the Arduino
Energy stocks - the picture says it all.
I ripped this out of one of my text books. This figure shows the total global demand for energy, reserves of fossil fuels and the total amount of solar energy earth receives per year. I find this to be one of the best visualisations related to the relative scale of resources available to us.
